Auburn
Below the snow and above the fog, Auburn, the oldest Gold Rush town in California, was founded in 1848. The city of Auburn, which is experiencing an historical revival with many buildings being restored, has 12,500 residents within the city limits and an estimated 44,000 population in the great Auburn area. There are two combined business districts: Old Town and Upper Town. Both have great restaurants, specialty shops, antique stores, art galleries, museums and area wineries and wine tasting.
Grass Valley
The first settlers arrived in Grass Valley in the Fall of 1849 and were joined by a few prospectors the next spring. The local Gold Rush gave birth to a thriving commercial, cultural and residential center for miners and many new businesses. Many of the miners came from Cornwall, England — hence, the Grass Valley Cornish Christmas celebration held each year. By the mid 1950s, gold mines gave way to logging and ranching industries which continue to be active. In recent years, vineyards and wineries have been a delightful addition. Today, a walk down the streets of this small town is steeped in history. Many historical buildings & homes have been preserved, bringing delight to all who see them.
GV’s current population is 12,000.
Residents and visitors enjoy visiting Grass Valley & Nevada City’s unique retail stores and restaurants.
Stopping for a wine tasting from one of the local wineries is a must do!
Nevada City
A genuine small town and living museum, NC’s population today is 3,050, but in the 1850’s, it was 10,000. NC, the county seat, served for years as the commercial, governmental and professional center of Nevada County. Since the turn of the century, however, it’s focus has gradually turned to the tourism industry. In 1985, the entire downtown area was registered as a national historic landmark. In recent years, the lifestyle of NC has attracted a number of well-known writers, artists and musicians. The area also draws high-tech business entrepreneurs. People come from all over the world to experience NC’s Victorian Christmas each year.
Lake of the Pines & Lake Wildwood

Both include a lake and various lake activities ... boating, water skiing, fishing & swimming .
